25 July PacNW Albacore Action

Postby wdlfbio » Tue Jul 28, 2015 12:27 am

Second albacore trip of the season. Five on board, 600# of ice, 38 miles off shore. 7' at 11 seconds with 8-10 knot winds in the forecast. Pretty good weather for us. Left the dock a little after 0600, grabbed 12# of live chovies and pointed the bow west (that's off shore for us here on the west coat of the country). Had to cross a fairly sloppy bar at 25 mph. The further west we got, the deeper and calmer that water. By the tie we hit the fishing grounds, it was maybe 5' at 11-12 seconds and pretty dang calm. Got even better throughout the day.

Start the troll when we got in with a few other boats. After about 15 minutes of nada, I positioned us in between and up wind of pair of boats on a live bait bite. They were a good 1/4 -1/2 mile apart. Dropped some live chovies over for chum and the water started swirling. Immediately after, I hear, FRESH ONE... HOOK UP!!! Game on. 3 crew are hooked up before I can even get my Trevala, Daiwa Saltist 5000H, and 168g Shimano butterfly into action. On my 2nd drop, I'm on and all 5 of us are on fish :) Put 9 fish on the boat and had to get back onto the troll. Went about 1/2 mile and the Xrap got ate. That stop lasted about 75 minutes and resulted in 24 nice albacore in the boat. Filled the 40 gallon bleed bucket in short order and had the subsequent fish bleeding out on the deck until we got around to tending to fish. The biggest went just over 39#, after bleeding. Had a few more over 30#, and a few down to 15-17#. 33 fish and the bite pretty much died by 1015 (which was the same time as my previous trip 2 weeks prior that resulted in 35 fish).

A little action of our last stop. Only produced the troll fish and two others after a long soak, but all quality fish.
