20 June PacNW salmon

Postby wdlfbio » Sun Jun 21, 2015 10:58 am

Finally got out fishing this season. Water was a little sporty with a NNW wind and a SW swell. Slogged out about 17 miles doing 20-25. Got up on top a few times, but the odd 5'+ swell with no back side kept reminding me to slow down. Oh well, it's only salmon, so no big rush.

Found some bait balls.

Bait

Trolled spoons and whole herring off down riggers to 80' and deep six divers about 24' behind the boat and proceeded to hook about a dozen kings and silvers. Limit is 2 salmon: 1 king (hatchery or wild) or 2 silvers (hatchery only). Barbless hooks are required, so we did lose a couple. But, we limited out anyway.

We had dozens of gray or humpback whales feeding all around, surfacing alongside boats, full breaches, etc. Some crazy shows. Whoever wrote about a dude surviving in the gut of some big white whale was a LIAR. Being remotely downwind of those things was horrible!!!

Nice work! Fresh salmon is one of my all time favorites! Wish we had them here in the south!

That's a nice looking fish box right there! Brings back memories of my Montesano days. Did you go out of Westport?

Yup on Westport. 3 trips and 1 king shy of 3 limits of kings and silvers. It is wide open right now. Folks weeding through 30-50 fish to get their keepers. And the tuna showed up a bit ago. Heading out for them Sunday :)
