Sonar Help

Postby Evan » Wed Apr 27, 2016 6:38 am

I just put in the transom mount DownVu transducer on my new Garmin 1040XS.
It doesn't work worth a crap.
I am wondering what i did wrong.
Looked at the pictures of others transom mount transducers.
I mounted it on the inside of the port sponson where it sits just below the step.
It works up t about 7 to 9 knots. Then its gone and even when I stop it takes a minute to re acquire.
The DownVu only works up to about 50 ft then nothing.
HELP!

What made you mount it on the inside of the sponson ?

I have never seen the 'cleanest' water there. The outside is where you would get the best shot.

I have a friend that works for Bob Hewes a big dealer in FL.
He was the one that said on the inside.
And I saw plenty of pictures of them on the inside.
I am going to relocate it to the outside.
As far as the DownVu.
I talked to Gararmin because the DownVu not working over 50'.
The guy basically told me that transom mount transducers are crap!
And they are still having problems with the chirp feature.
Said i needed to update the software.
it beats the crap out of me why these companies release products that don't work like they say they should.
They are sending me a new transducer. But i may just buy a 50/200 and to hell with the chirp crap.
My buddy has a drift boat with a 1040xs and a thru hull mounted on a fairing block that is 50/200 and shows the bottom and the water column unbelievable.
First i don't feel like trashing the bottom of the boat.
Second I don't feel like spending a grand on Thru Hull or an Airmar TM260 and still not get what i am looking for.
For now i am going to reconnect my Lowrance HDS-5 to my existing Air P79 transducer.
Hay, thanks for the response! I am always perplexed by the fact that I never get any help with my issues.
Anyway thanks again.

I have no issues with the images from a SI ducer mounted on the outside of the sponson on the transom. I stayed away from Garmin since they just came out with it last year and I did not want to be their guinea pig. Instead I rigged up with a Humminbird and a Lowrance both with a transom mount on the outside of the sponson. No issues at all.

Good luck with your install and report back with your results.

I with ya on the Guinea pig!
The software on the unit has been updated 18 times so far.
Meanwhile I found the end of the cable from my P79 ducer and am going to connect my
Lowrance HDS7.
The split screen is great but isn't worth a crap when you are trying to nail a spot.
You need full screen.

I updated the software on the 1040xs to see if the downVu works.
If it doesn't I'll have them send me a new ducer and mount it on the outside.
NIGHTIDES did you mount it all the way on the outside on the chine?

Never on the chine since it carries bubbles all the way to the transom.

I swing about a 16" prop and don't want to disturb the water going to the prop. So from the center of the drain plug I measure 8" out (1/2 of the 16") and add 1.5-2" more to make certain I don't disturb that flow. So I am generally 9.5-10" out from the center of the drain plug. And again never on the chine.

Hope this helps.

I have owned several garmin depth/gps. Every single one I have owned I glued directly to the inside of the hull in the bilge area. I just uses a simple 5 minute two part epoxy from home depot and glued it in. No sanding, etc. I put the glue on the bilge area and on the transducer itself. Push it down and twist it a bit go get rid of bubbles. Not once have I had any problem with them. Just a thought.
