Live well and fish box back flowing

Postby flynn » Sat Jul 19, 2014 10:27 pm

I just purchased a 246 DC and noticed that both the live well and the adjacent fish box back flow water from their respective thru-hull fittings during underway conditions. What's up with that and what is the recommended procedure to eliminate this?

I have a 266SF so this might not apply to your 246DC. The livewell will backfill from the tank bottom drain underway unless the tank drain valve is closed. Your drain valve might be obstructed and partially open. The inlet seacock must be kept closed or the livewell will fill by the movement of the boat through the water without the circulation pump on. The livewell overfill drain doesn't have a valve.

Thanks! Great answer and you are correct.
I've solved that issue by utilizing a large plug inside the compartments when getting underway and leave it open during dock time for proper drainage of rainwater (though I have to say it appears to be pretty watertight.)

I installed a valve in front of the strainer when I did the install of the new live well pump. Again, check the underside seal on your transom live well.

OK, let me hijack this thread since I have a related problem.

The dealer removed and resealed my raw water thru hull because they said it was leaking. Now, when underway, I'm getting water into the bait well without the pump being turned on.

Anyone know what is going on here??
