Not sure I want to smell like wd-40 after a long days fishing in florida...but maybe its better than stank ballyhoo and chum!

LAst August I was looking for a boat and spoke with a WC dealer who had a DC/WC that was owned by a plant eng. there (at World Cat). There were pink spots all over the vinyl on that boat & she told me that she was trying to get all new vinyl from World Cat for the boat & they had told her that they had gotten a "bad batch" of material through the vendor. Don't know about the truth of what she told me, but that was one of the things that put me off on that boat at the time.

The world cat I purchased (2002 Leisurecat) had lots more vinyl but, fortunatly for me, it was without the spotting problem. I know that 3M makes a vinyl creme product that protects well & Spray nine suffices for my cleaning needs.

I'm on my 3rd set of vinyl and it needs replacement! WC already replaced everything twice. Bad batch, bad vendor or what?

I'd like to hear the failure rate stats from WC. They had failure rates for the BEP switches, so maybe they have them for the coaming pads.

I understand that a number of people have had problems, but, in my case....they were just worn out from 8 years of use. I did have a hard time matching the vinyl (4 inch pleat and color) and the reason for the original post was that I hoped Phyllis or someone at the plant might give me some ideas. I think I have it solved now. Since I've been dealing with a couple of marine vinyl shops, I did ask what might cause the splotching or staining problem. They had never experienced anything like what is being described other than one guy said he had gotten ink on the padding underneath the vinyl of one boat in the past and after several months, the ink caused purple spots to meld into the vinyl. He could not get it out and had to recover the seats.

SeaBiscuit,

Did you find matching vinyl, e.i. pleat and color? If so do you have the mfgr and part no.?

That's most likely purple vinyl mold. I'll try and remember to get some new pics tomorrow. I have some real pretty mold stains growing right now.

I decided to go with "Alabaster" color and 4 inch pleat. That will looks pretty much like the original. I'm not going to have them do the WC logo on the seats and bolsters. Not really worth the $$$. I should have them back next week and I'll post the name of the vinyl manufacture.
I never heard back from WC folks, but, that's OK considering the number of pink and purple splotches being reported from that particular seat vendor.
My main concern is just getting this done, cause it's time for fishing in our neck of the woods.

I found some advise from doll collectors on removing purple vinyl mold. I'll have to try one of their remedies.

I have the purple mold on almost every piece of vinyl on my new boat. The helm seat looks like it is polka dotted. On almost every trip, one of my customers makes mention of the purple spots on my upholstery.

You guys aren't alone!

you guys should try "ortho" :o weed killer, does wonders on algae and mold and won't hurt the threads or color of the vinyl. :)
