Fuel pick up

Postby conehead39 » Sun May 08, 2005 9:26 am

My son on a 99 266 just called me ,Sunday ,9am, out in the ocean.
He can not get any fuel from the starboard tank.
He disconnected the fuel line before the squeeze ball and can NOT blow back into the tank.
Want to know if the pickup or pick up tube has a check valve.
If not, then it must have a hard clog in the pickup.
Presently running both engines from port tank.
This will cause an imbalance lateral load the longer he runs it.

After timing out on WCC forum I attached my reply.
Debris in the starboard pickup. Would not blow back with mouth. He used squeze ball installed backwards and unclogged it.

Attached is a drawing of a spin on fuel filter head.
Port tank supplying both engines.
Note the inlets are closes to the mounting flange.
The outlets are oposite the mount.
Generally there will be two 1/4" NPT threaded pipe plugs in the filter head. Two openings will have 1/4" nipples for the hoses. One in ,One out.
There are several scenarios where you may want to feed two engines from the same tank.
All you have to do is switch the outlet nipple from one filter head and put it in the other filter head. You will also switch the outlet plug .
You will end up with one in line and two out lines.

So to able do this easier in the ocean, remove your plugs and nipples when ashore, and teflon tape them.
Helps to have wrenches . Just something to remember if stuck.

As a new owner to a 1999 266SF in Destin, FL, I was interested to see the problem your son encountered with picking up trash from the tank. I've just replaced the water/fuel filters and I've never seen fuel in worse condition. Looks like chocolate milk in the starboard tank, although the engines have not sputtered. I think I'm pumping that one out, but, how would you get any debris out that would still be in the tank?

There is a company here in Islamorada that pumps out contaminated fuel tanks.
I think he goes down thru the filler hose.Somewhat like a home septic tank pump out.

we are going to try removing the pick up tube and inspecting the pick up bottom.I would like to know if there is a screen at the end of the pickup tube.Anybody had one out???. or WCC factory reply.
Previous DUSKY had a string of fiber glass in the tube,no screen. It would run but not over 3,000 rpm.

We may make our own rig by using an electric fuel pump and several external fuel tanks.

Your chocolate colored fuel is caused by iron rust.
since the tank is plastic then it came from your fuel supplier.

You should have a racor low micron fuel filter.Drain it frequently (daily). Also check the engine filter(s).
If you have contaminates at engine filter(s)change or clean , then drain the kidney shaped vapor cannister ( purple shaded plastic hose). see one of my earlier post.

Conehead,

I had my pick up tubes crack on my old 266 SF like Brians. I simply went to B&F Marine and bought the new poly pickup tubes which slid down inside and screwed into the existing tubes and after measuring the correct depth and cutting a slight angle they worked perfectly.

Thanks Jim.
I assume yours and ours were probably aluminum.
I have often wondered how the pickup tube survives the sloshing back and forth of the fuel over time.

Thanks and I have been looking at the best way to change out the current fuel/water filters to the Racor, as that's what I've used in the past.

Your present fuel filter head should have the same threads as a Racor. You just throw away the Sierra or whatever filter that costs around $8-10.
The racor center and plastic lower sump with drain cost $20 -25 but is a finer micron filter. Recommended by all the Outbd mfgs.
There are basically two thread sizes large and small.
The large hole threads are for OMC spin on fuel filters.
The small was originally Mercury and were adopted by Suzuki,Yamaha. I am not sure about Honda.
However I think WCC puts on the small thread ones.
Large one thumb will go inside. Small one your wedding ring finger.Racor PN S3213 element replaces Merc Quicksilver

Thanks, that answered one of my questions, whether or not I needed to change out the base. Vertical clearance is a problem, but, I've seen on several older posts where folks have worked around that. Regarding the iron oxide in the tank, would you dispose of that fuel or burn thru it? There was no debris in the filter, the fuel just looked brown. It had been burning like normal. Maybe its not unusual but, this is the first time I've ever run into fuel like that, and it was only in the starboard tank. I do know that the previous owner had the port tank pumped over a year ago due to excessive water from a bad seal around sending unit access.
