266 SF control cable length?

Postby mpostgate » Tue Oct 17, 2017 4:10 pm

Hi All,

I need to replace the shift and throttle control cables on my 2000 266SF (Merc 200hp Optimax's). I have inspected both ends of each cable for markings and only one end of one cable shows any markings at all (see pic). It looks like a 20' cable... is that correct? The cable pictured is attached to the starboard motor. I think I recall that the port motor cables are longer, maybe 22'?

I've searched the forums for info and it seems there are lots of cable length questions but not so many definitive answers. I realize I can pull the cables and measure them, but I'd rather keep them installed until the new cables can be ordered and delivered. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I measured mine while they were installed using a tape measure to approximate the distance. An extra foot of cable should not matter. However, once I disconnected them on each end, I found the cables were OK and the problem of making it hard to shift was due to lack of grease in the fitting on the motor. This is a common problem as most folks don't know there is a fitting there and it is hard to get to. I am talking about Yamaha's though, so, I don't know about yours. I would disconnect them and see if they slide freely before replacing.

So... to be clear, my cable lengths should be 20' for starboard and 22' for port?

I suggest you email or call World Cat for the official answer. I know my cables were two feet longer on the port side when i replaced them after ten years. The old cables still worked but the covering was peeling off near the motors on my 1998 266SF. Using the search function WC mentions 24 ft cables so call the factory or pull a cable out with a cord attached for easier reinstalling.

When I replaced mine, WC wasn't much help. They referred me to a dealer, dealer referred me to WC...and so on.

I ended up pulling my lines and taking a measurement. Boat Steering Solutions had them built and to my door within a week.
