266TE cracks info?

Postby afishin82 » Mon Mar 20, 2017 10:26 pm

Hello WC forum. I'm new here and hope to find some advice on my boat. I bought my 2002 266TE a few months ago and am having some issues with cracking in the tunnel. I believe the previous owner may have repaired them but not really sure. Gel coat seems to be a slightly different tint and also found some filler under the gel coat once I started grinding into the cracks. I noticed the cracks which looked like minor stress crack when i bought it and was not worried about it. After 3 trips offshore, one in 3-5 ft seas, i noticed water seeping from the cracks and realized they had gotten much worse. I then marked them before the next trip to see if they were growing and they are. Got a few quotes and talked to world cat (no help whatsoever) and decided to try a repair. Seems to be some serious delamination and wonder if anybody has had success with fixing the issue. Seems like there could be delamination down the whole tunnel but we are not sure. He has ground out the cracks and is ready to start laying up glass and hoping for the best. I hate to say it but neither of us are very confident that this will solve the problem. If anyone has had success with a repair I would be very very grateful for a solution. I absolutely love everything about the boat (except for the darn crack) and hope there is a way to get it fixed without bankrupting me!

Thanks
Andre

Oh and forgot to mention the horizontal bulkhead in the anchor Locker broke loose up front and there seems to be minor delamination on the corners of the bulkheads in the sponson in the anchor Locker. This will also be repaired

World cat told me not to use the boat and find a qualified fiberglass shop to fix it. They recommended a guy and his solution was grind out the bad glass and build up new. Also repair the bulkheads as best he can without cutting the boat to peices. This is what a local guy is doing. I'm hoping for the best and time will tell.

When I had a Seacat SL5 I had that same problem with the front transverse bulkhead in the anchor locker busting off. A surveyor looked at it and said that once that bulkhead breaks loose the individual hulls can spread and that's what causes the cracks.

I found a great fiberglass guy in Surfside TX and he fixed the bulkhead very well for $400.

Some 1998-2000 WC 266 hulls had weak transoms, tunnel, and anchor locker cracking problems. Your problems sound similar. My 266 SF was one of the problem hulls. WC did repair the transoms and hull cracking under the 5 year hull warranty. WC placed the blame on the previous maker of the hulls. The repair work was supposedly done by a subcontractor. Cosmetic gelcote tunnel cracking reappeared after I began using the repaired 266SF. A WC dealer repaired the new cracking, but WC refused to stand by their previous repairs saying that the warranty had now expired. I was on the hook for the necessary repairs of the WC repairs. Furthermore, WC claimed that subcontractor repairs were not covered by a warranty. Because of the WC 266 reputation for hull defects, a person can find many used 266 hulls on the used boat market at attractive prices.
However, having said what applied to my boat, your hull is a later model that should have had the benefit of improved construction. I believe your hull had a ten year warranty. Good luck !

I have 1999 266 SC,and have the cosmetic hairline cracks in tunnel that I believe many will get.
They were there when I bought it,back 11 yrs ago,and maybe a few more now.....
I have over 2000 hrs on this hull, and it has taken some abuse, but it is still a solid platform.
I trust this hull and will continue using it offshore.
Sorry to hear of your unfortunate situation, and I hope it all goes well.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't too worried about the cracking till I saw water seeping from them. Bulkheads will be redone and cracks reglassed. Hope to have it done sometime next week. I will post results after some use.
