2nd testing of twin trim system

Postby off gassing on Fri Nov 06, 2009 12:18 pm

As arranged Jim showed up at my house the other morning with his black box in hand. Wihtin 15 minutes he had it hooked up and I had the boat ready for a little sea trial. We headed out of Biloxi on a beautiful and very calm day. The port switch was set up to raise and lower both motors togeter which in effect controlled the pitch of the boat and the starboard switch controlled the motors in opposite directions at the same time controlling the roll of the boat.
What this system did was to simplify my ability to control the boat in severral diferent maneuvers. Going into a hard turn you simply drop the bow with the left switch, roll the boat into the turn with the right switch and cut the wheel hard with your left hand. I very impressed how quick my boat responded and how tight the turns cold be made while maintaining stability. It is the tightest and quickest turns my boat has ever done. The systems is very simple in use and would probably become second nature within a very short amount of time.
I plan on installing this gear on the boat as soon as John has the units availible for my configuration. I believe it will improve the overall ride and stability of the boat by giving the captain better controll of the boats attidude.

I find it interesting that you set it up opposite of the way I had mine tested...pitch on right, roll on left. To me, it seemed more intuitive the way I had it. Of course the beauty of the system is that by disconnecting and reconnecting 6 bullet terminals, you can reverse the switching.

What we did was similar with the roll under your thumb, on the suzuki throttles with opposing switches the roll goes on the left, on honda's it's better on the right so you don't have to reach across the bow up/down switch when leveling or cornering.
There is also a safety feature built into the module that if you push both switches up or down together the roll function is disabled and both motors will go up and down accordingly.
This is helpful when you run across a sand bar and forget about your modification.

I purchased the system about 2 months ago, but living in the northeast I have yet to test it on the water. Installation is very simple and I will be running the boat in the river fishing for striper's before taking it and put her in the slip for the summer. I will post my experience running with the twin trim in a few weeks.

Hi, John
Hopefully they be taking the screws out on Thurs. 04/08/10. It's not easy doing a boat makeover with one hand (see pics). I basically changed the helm, lvewell area, and a lot more. Will post pics. when complete. It looks like will be doing a shake down run this coming weekend. Can't wait to try the Twin Trim out.

Larry,

I searched to see if you posted what happened but didn't see anything. Looks like a pretty bad break. Hope it heals completely.

Have you had a chance to get the boat in the water yet?

Hi John, Were taking the boat down to the marina Tuesday. My Garmin network crapped out on me and had to wait for Garmin to send my unit back. Garmin really did a good job in a short time getting the network working. The main hold up has been the rehab on the wrist. When your 61 yrs young things don't heal as quick as they use to. We had planned to take the boat down today or Tomorrow but winds of 30 to 60 mph killed that idea. Talked to the guy at the marina and he said the wind has actually blown most of the water out of the bay at low tide. Will post ASAP about the Twin Trim.

How much isTwin Trim.. $$$$$$$
w/wo joy stick.
various packages + approximate labor to install.

BTW the old F-15 fighter movable stabilator. tail works in a similar way with differential stab control during roll.
ie. it helps create the rolling moment along with ailerons, however the stick does both ailerons and differential stabs.

you don't need to read the link unless you are really curious about the F15 ~ >30 years old.
