290DC Question Regarding Hull Structure

Postby Trent » Thu Sep 11, 2008 7:12 pm

World Cat,

I just purchased a new 290DC and want to install an Airmar M260 In Hull transducer. The only easily accessible location for a transducer this size is in the aft bilge compartment. Airmar stresses that this transducer is only effective when shooting through solid fiberglass vs. a composite "sandwich". Is the 290DC hull solid fiberglass in this location? I would be installing this adjacent to the bilge pump on the opposite side of the (stringer?).

I believe that the 290, like all other WCs is solid below the waterline.

Trent,
see airmar web site for M260 installation .
It suggests you put the TD inside a plastic bag filled with water and close the bag with a twisty or a plastic tie around the TD cable.
Then move it around in the boat while in the water,I prefer out in deeper water. The port aft bilge could be better than the stbd, because there may be a slight air void in the 5/8 in thick hull on the right.

I drilled 2 in holes, port and stbd, three years ago for B117 TDs,thru hull, not IN hull M260. One plug had a very air slight void compared to the other.
The TD/ FF is looking for the fish air bladder in its cone . Bigger bladder ,bigger return.Air void for in hull TD confuses it and thinks there is a fish right under the hull.
There is an old procedure to test the FF/TD. Tie a sinker line to a lite bulb and another line to the light bulb. Pull it under the TD cone and the light bulb looks like a fish bladder.

I know Airmar suggests the Right rear location due to prop rotates outward. Well it rotates outward on the port side also.
They are thinking mainly about SE boats and the right side would be better in that case.

I believe B Cooke told me there is composite foam under the fuel tank beds, but NONE in the aft bilge holes, like Harry said.

I think you will really like the M260 TD. What kind of FF/depth unit?

Ken,

The foam is between the hull and the fuel tank subfloor, not in the actual structure itself...it is flotation.

Am connecting to Garmin 5212 via Garmin GSD22. I tested port side about 8" forward of transom and again just hanging it over the side. Return was not much different so I think I've found my location. Thanks for the feedback.

hanging it over the side is NOT the same as putting it inside a soft plastic bag full of water, inside the hull.
see page 2 "TESTING THE LOCATION"
various methods

http://www.airmartechnology.com/uploads ... 446-01.pdf

If you hang it over the side DO NOT hold the TD by its cable.

I actually did both.. soft plastic bag test inside hull....AND hung by rope over side.... got nearly identical returns. I epoxied the box into the bilge today so should be in business shortly.

you won't see any difference in shallow water.
However above 400 feet there will be some.

i asked Airmar 2-3 years ago about percent of loss with in hull.function of hull thickness . WCC is 1/2 - 5/8 in thick.
1. 50khz 15%
2 200khz 25-30%.
